High Blood Pressure and Salt – Fact or Fiction?

High Blood Pressure and Salt – Fact or Fiction?

There can be no denying that too much salt can cause harm to your system and act as an agent of High Blood Pressure but that is only part of the story. The most important bit has been left out.

It’s not actually the salt per se that is the problem. Your body needs real salt, real natural salt either from the earth or from the sea, and is well-equipped to handle it. It has become the stuff of history and in fact in days gone by, Salt as a commodity was extremely highly regarded and very valuable. In ancient Greece, slaves were traded for salt – hence the expression “not worth his salt.” Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt (salis) and their salarium is the origin of our word “salary”. “Soldier” actually comes from the Latin (sal dare), which means, “to give salt”.

but I digress.

Commercial salt producers remove all the good minerals (for sale to industry) and add several harmful chemicals (to bleach the salt white and keep it from caking) and therein lies one of the major problem issues.

The impurities that come along with our own commercially and domestically available Salt. Also the other fact that the major contributor to Salt (aka Sodium Chloride) is….Sodium and the real problem is that our body can handle Sodium but our diet nowadays is so deficient in the useful minerals that we need to be able to cope with Sodium, namely Potassium that too much Sodium becomes an issue thereby fuelling the “Salt is bad for us” debate.

So is High Blood Pressure and Salt the main debate? Shouldn’t be as it is only part of the story.

High Blood Pressure and Foods to avoid?

High Blood Pressure and Foods to avoid? Well the answer to that one is obvious isn’t it? Those that bring you nothing but harm!

OK joking apart what can we do to make sure that we stay on the safe side of food?

Well the obvious ones are those that have high levels of salt or certain types of Fat or Cholesterol.

I say certain types of fat because a great many folks out there just believe in a total low fat diet whereas there are certain types of fat that are actually beneficial to us.

The “bad” fats that we consume i.e. the saturated and trans fats—increase the risk for certain diseases. The “good” fats—monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can actually form part of a diet that can lower disease risk. The key to a healthy diet is to substitute good fats for bad fats—and to avoid trans fats.

So if we are to sum up in a basic few words, the total amount of things like fat you eat, whether this is reduced or you eat lots of it doesn’t really impact upon High Blood Pressure (it might impact upon other aspects of your diet such as your weight, which in turn…….).

What really matters is the type of fats that you consume.

So, along with Salt (which we’ll cover elsewhere), Fats are amongst the main types of High Blood Pressure Foods to avoid.

High Blood Pressure and Foods

High Blood Pressure and Foods are very much a lifestyle choice for you to make? By this I mean that no one forces you to do anything, it’s up to you which pathway you wish to follow. Is it first of all to go down the road of just going on the way you are with no alteration whatsoever in your food intake and just trust to the power of medication?

Or is that you want to make a positive choice and have a positive stance on what you do about your High Blood Pressure?

Me? I found it easier to take the latter road. Do something positive and be proactive..

To be honest I’ve made easier decisions, it would have been a damned site easier just to continue the way I was going and just take the medicine every morning on time and trust to my doctor but (and we cover this at a later stage) all medicine has side effects and for my part I was getting fed up of night cramps, sweats and associate grief so it was very much a case of:

“OK, I am here for the long haul, better get your butt in gear and do something about it”

The above having been said, I am not trying to stress that I am some sort of lifestyle guru surviving on a regular meal of three bean sprouts and some tofu (can’t stand the stuff myself) just start off in the early days with a common sense approach to eating and work your way up from there.

As they say in all walks of life. “Success is a synch by the inch; by the yard it’s hard” so in the early stages take it one day at a time and if you “fall off the wagon” from time to time – don’t beat yourself up over it.

Just dust yourself down and get back on the program again and next time try and stay on for longer.

Believe me it does get easier and you’ll feel all the better for it. Once you’ve been at this  for a  short time you will understand totally the relationship that exists between High Blood Pressure and Foods

High Blood Pressure and Foods – the relationship?

High Blood Pressure and Foods – the relationship? I guess in many ways, this is really the hard one as it’s a fairly basic issue. Bit like the “chicken or egg” situation of childhood humour, which came first or indeed is there any correlation at all?

Does what you eat give you High Blood Pressure or did your High Blood Pressure merely compound your consumption or your attitude towards your own food?

It’s a hard one to be truthful as in most cases the cause of High Blood Pressure is quite a complex issue but what can safely be said is that certain foods certainly compound and complicate High Blood Pressure whilst certain other foods can help alleviate symptoms and indeed act as an agent of change (albeit only temporary sometimes).

In most cases the relationship between High Blood Pressure and Foods lies in between – it almost certainly wasn’t the prime cause of the High Blood pressure and yes a good diet can help you live longer and help you control your High Blood Pressure.

High Blood Pressure and Foods – Welcome

Yes I  was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, but the terrific news is that it’s well under control.

What I want to explore in this site is the relationship between this condition we call High Blood Pressure and Foods. It’s a link and relationship that goes way deep and one that handled correctly can be dealt with quite easily.

I was diagnosed with extremely high Blood Pressure in 2001 with a reading of 216 over 160 – yes that high.

To put it into perspective, ideal readings should be in the region of 120 over 80 but now my levels regularly come in at around the 120-40 over 75-85 levels.

How did this come about? Exercise and medication.

Medication in the initial stages as the condition had to be brought under control….and fast and latterly exercise.

To be honest, it’s a combination of things that will keep this under control but onwards ever forward.

So what is the purpose of this site?

Well really it’s to spread the word that a diagnosis of High Blood Pressure is not the “Death Sentence” it once was and that you can do something positive about it.

Yes we are promoting certain items on this site. It’s how we pay for the site and they are things that I believe in.

What does the future have in store for me and what actions will I take?

Exercise, rest and relaxation and if I keep these up then I will be able to cut back on the medication right down to the bare minimum which is where I want to be.

Why the bare minimum?

Well to be honest, my initial diagnosis was so extreme that it would be totally foolhardy of me to drop the medication now it’s under control. Call it an insurance policy if you will but it doesn’t mean that I don’t fully subscribe to the methods, techniques and practices that I refer to in this site, I do and it’s because of them that I’ve been able to drop my readings down to the average levels and keep them there.
